So we didn't have a 5 of 7 for New Year's or Christmas, but we certainly didn't miss Guy Fawkes day... have you seen a theme here yet?  No good obscure western holidays are coming up, so thank goodness for Coming of Age Day, which is a Japanese Holiday that falls on Monday!

Winter Seasonal Card and Avatar Event

The holiday season may be over, but now we're staring down the barrel of a long winter. Chase away those wintertime blues with new Seasonal Card art.  We've returned the four winter-themed cards from last year, and added four all new ones, so that's two in each Sphere. Also note, the four winter cards from last year are also the only seasonal cards never to appear in a seasonal lottery, so you've probably never seen them before.

Alteil’s first full year has come and gone, and left things ever different from when it started. In terms of site traffic, users and income, things are looking up. Last month was our best in Alteil history, and it’s even possible we’ll be in the black by the end of next year. The server now has over 81,000 registered accounts, although the mileage you can get out of that number may vary (I think the average user has at least 4, and there was this one guy who made over 100 accounts in one day just to see if I’d notice.)

Arakis' Quest - The Single Copy Quest 1/4/10 - 1/18/10

It's a new year, and a new Quest. It feels like it's time to try something really out in left field, and maybe prove a point in the process. It's a commonly-held belief, and not an unfounded one, that to build a successful card file in Alteil you need full playsets of the cards therein. This means, in nearly all cases, 3 copies of each unit. There are a few units that work with just 1 or 2 copies, and grimoires are of course a different story altogether. What say we turn this standard on its head?

I Love You Microsoft - A Post About X-Box and Rankings
Written by Edgar Figaro
Monday, 04 January 2010 19:48

I'm sure many of you are console gamers. And I'm also pretty sure many of you own X-Box 360s. Over 34 millions consoles have shipped worldwide. And I'm sure MOST of you, that's right MOST of you, have gotten the red ring of death. I thought I was immune to it. All my friends have fallen ill to it. But alas, even I, Edgar Figaro, your friendly web designer/community manager has fallen. You will too, it's only a matter of time.

I think Microsoft is holding my console hostage. They do not want to give it back. They tried to at one point, I think around the time it was repaired, but they forgot to put an apartment number on the box. That really seems to stymie the UPS guys. It's not that they haven't delivered oh say about 100 other packages to this same address. It's not that I could possibly be in their system and all they'd have to do is take a minute and LOOK MY INFORMATION UP! But no, this is not about them. This is about Microsoft.

It seems their customer service department is ill equipped to handle when a console gets SHIPPED BACK TO THEM because THEY FORGOT TO PUT THE DAMN APARTMENT NUMBER on the box when they shipped it the first time!!! It's been over 2 months and still don't have my 360 back. Everytime I call them up, they tell me it's been shipped, it's arrived, you have it. Ya know, if I had it Samir (not trying to be racist, his name really was Samir), I wouldn't be on this phone with you right now if I had it, now would I? So I have to sit there and explain the situation to them because it seems their department is ill equipped to TAKE SOME SIMPLE NOTES ON THE SITUATION SO I DON'T HAVE TO RETELL MY TALE OF WOE TO THEM EACH TIME AS A SINGLE TEAR ROLLS DOWN MY FACE.

I had made provisions for the holiday season to secure a lender X-Box from my good friend Lupos. He has two. I had forgotten that I have a NEWER X-Box with less power consumption than Lupos' OLDER one with more. Had to shell out for a replacement power brick. $70! And that was the used one. One which I was going to return because I really didn't need it anymore. Oh but Edgar, is not your console still in Texas at the Microsoft Service Center? Yes, fellow Iczer, it is. So then you should be happily playing X-Box on the loaner console until yours comes back? Ho ho, silly Iczer. I had left the brick home so my family could return it because I had no need for it (figuring of course that the service center had the skills necessary to reship out my console). Sadly, I took the receipt with me. So here I am, one X-Box, an incompatible power supply, a compatible power supply (at the parents house), $70 poorer, and a copy of Assassin's Creed II that is getting no love.

Oh and my new LCD TV which is NOT hooked up the 360 sitting just a few feet away.

But alas, my troubles are my own.

Thankfully, my troubles cannot stop the rankings from being delivered though. The rankings are above my troubles. And here they are.

As always, anyone who has dealt with the fury and rage that is the Microsoft Service Center* AND has fought in the arena at least once this week will receive at least 10 gran. Listed below are your top 5 ranked Iczers, top 3 guilds, guilds that have become official.

*Does not affect eligibility for weekly gran but it certainly makes you a different person afterwards.

New Year is now Happy-er
Written by Logress

As many of you know, Alteil is originally a Japanese game (so that's why it's so frustrating...) and there is a well known Japanese tradition of giving out money for New Years. Not gifts, not gift certificates, but always cold, hard cash.  So, in honor of 2010, everyone on the server is now 110 Gran richer!

As the only GM capable of typing at 1 AM on New Years morning, it's my duty to do the New Year's post.  This isn't where I say how this was the best year in Alteil history (err, the ONLY full year...so I guess it has to be?) or how mind blowingly awesome next year will be (with Alteil cards beamed directly into your brain), no, this is just where I thank everyone whose been a part of Alteil this year.

Thanks to Arakis, AnnatheRed, DWildstar, CSquared, EdgarFigaro, Lupos and GGG for a lot of late nights (and early mornings for all that stuff that has to be done around maintenance time, Lupos) teamwork and quick thinking that have kept us alive so far. Thanks to our tireless Japanese staff who, after 40 (or 60 or maybe 80) hours a week taking care of their own Alteil, still manage to find time for us.  Thanks to our Alphas (I know some of you are still here) and Betas (who made Set 6 happen) for putting up with our terrible test server and its technical shenanigans. Thanks to all those Iczers who came to see us at cons so we could actually see the faces of our users for once (and thanks to digital cameras and the web, so could everyone else). Thanks to Miyamoto-sensei and Asanuma-sensei for creating Alteil. Thanks to MB for letting us bring it to the US. Thanks to all those vets who we know by (user)name and all the new players I hope to be thanking again next year. Thanks to those who have supported us, either financially or with some words of encouragement. Thanks to all those on the forums who tell us what we need to hear, even if we don't want to hear it. Thanks to those who just play, because that's all it's about. This has been a great year, and all of you made it that way.

This year brought many things, several of our users having babies, several of our users coming to NY to hang out with us. Some of our users had good times, some had bad. As staffers, we've made a lot of friends through Alteil. Strangely, or maybe not so strangely, even the ones who don't play anymore have stayed our in touch and stayed our friends. Also strangely, this post started out being about Alteil and users, and turned into a post about friends.

So, friends, happy New Year.
